If you employ 5 or more staff a fire risk assessment is a legal requirement. On 1^st October 2006 The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into force and encompassed all other fire safety legislation in the UK requiring a responsible/competent person to carry out an assessment of their fire risks and record them.
