About Course:

This course provides essential first aid training for those working with children. Participants will gain the skills to respond to emergencies, from CPR to treating choking or injuries. The training ensures that you can confidently provide first aid in situations involving infants and children.

Objectives:

  • Understand the Roles and Responsibilities of the Paediatric First Aider
  • Be able to Assess an Emergency situation Safely
  • Be able to Provide First Aid for an Infant and a Child who is Unresponsive and Breathing normally
  • Be able to Provide First Aid for an Infant and a Child who is Unresponsive and not breathing Normally
  • Be able to Provide First Aid to an Infant and a Child who has a Foreign Body Airway Obstruction
  • Administer first aid to an infant and a child who is choking
  • Be able to Provide First Aid to an Infant and a Child with External Bleeding
  • Understand how to Provide First Aid to an Infant and a Child who is Suffering from Shock
  • Understand how to Provide First Aid to an Infant and a Child with Anaphylaxis
  • Be able to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child with Injuries to Bones, Joints and Muscles
  • Be able to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child with Head and Spinal Injuries
  • Understand how to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child with Conditions affecting the Eyes, Ears and Nose
  • Understand how to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child with a Chronic Medical Condition or Sudden Illness
  • Understand how to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child who is experiencing the effects of Extreme Heat and Cold
  • Understand how to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child who has Sustained an Electric Shock
  • Understand how to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child with Burns or Scalds
  • Understand how to Administer First Aid to an Infant and a Child who has been Poisoned

  • Understand how to Complete Records relating to Illnesses. Injuries and Emergencies

At the end of the training session, candidates will have covered the following modules:

  • Define responsibilities of a paediatric First Aider
  • Explain how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • Describe first aid and personal protection equipment required for emergencies
  • Describe how to use first aid and personal protection equipment safely
  • Identify what information needs to be included in an accident/incident form
  • Explain the procedures following an accident/incident
  • Define an infant and a child for the purposes of first aid treatment
  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
  • Identify when to call for help
  • Explain what information needs to be given when obtaining assistance
  • Assess the level of consciousness of an infant and a child
  • Explain why an infant and a child should be placed in the recovery position
  • Place an infant and a child in the recovery position
  • Continually monitor an infant and a child whilst they are in the recovery position
  • Assist an infant and a child who is experiencing seizure
  • Identify when to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an unresponsive infant and unresponsive child who is not breathing normally
  • Administer CPR using an infant and a child manikin
  • Identify when a foreign body obstruction is: Mild or Severe
  • Describe the types an severity of bleeding
  • Explain the effect of severe blood loss on an infant and a child
  • Control external bleeding
  • Define the term shock relevant to first aid
  • Describe how to recognise an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
  • Explain how to manage the effects of shock
  • List common triggers for anaphylaxis
  • Describe how to recognise anaphylaxis in an infant and a child
  • Explain how to administer first aid for an infant and a child with anaphylaxis
  • Describe types of fractures
  • Recognise suspected: Fractures, Dislocations, Sprains and Strains
  • Describe how to recognise suspected Concussion, Skull Fracture, Cerebral Compression, Spinal Injury
  • Be able to administer first aid for suspected: Concussion, Skull Fracture, Cerebral Compression, Spinal Injury
  • Identify conditions affecting the Eyes, Ears, Nose
  • Explain the action to take when conditions are identified
  • Describe how to recognise Sickle cell crisis, Diabetic emergencies, Asthma attack, Allergic reaction, Meningitis, Febrile Convulsions
  • Explain how to manager Sickle cell crisis, Diabetic emergencies, Asthma attach, Allergic reaction, Meningitis, Febrile Convulsions
  • Describe how to recognise the effects of: Extreme Cold & Extreme Heat
  • Explain how to manage the effects of: Extreme Cold & Extreme Heat
  • Explain how to safely manage an incident involving electricity
  • Describe first aid treatments for electric shock incidents
  • Describe how to recognise the severity of Burns & Scalds
  • Explain how to manage Burns & Scalds
  • Identify the routes that poisonous substances take to enter the body
  • Identify sources of information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning
  • Explain how to manage sudden poisoning
  • Identify severity of bites and stings
  • Explain how to manage bites and stings
  • Explain how to administer first aid for: Small Cuts, Grazed, Bumps and Bruises, Small Splinters, Nosebleeds

Course Requirements:

To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Be physically capable of performing practical first aid skills, including: Kneeling on the floor for extended periods (e.g., during CPR practice). Delivering effective chest compressions on a manikin. Placing a casualty into the recovery position safely.
  • Be able to demonstrate CPR to the required standard, which includes continuous compressions for a set period. This requires a moderate level of physical fitness and upper body strength.
  • Have the mobility to respond quickly and safely in simulated emergency scenarios, such as bending, reaching, and supporting a casualty.
  • Inform the trainer of any medical or physical conditions (e.g., joint problems, back pain, pregnancy) that may affect participation in practical tasks, so adaptations can be considered if appropriate.
  • Wear appropriate, comfortable clothing for practical floor-based activities.

Certification:

Upon successful completion, participants will receive an accredited first aid certificate. Certificates are emailed within 2 weeks of course completion, with paper copies available upon request.
